ABOUT US

Kathleen Jennie Powis
Kate was a vibrant, compassionate, and determined young woman whose far-too-brief life left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. Born on April 7, 2007, in Livingston, New Jersey, and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, she passed away on August 17, 2024, after a 14-month battle with kidney cancer.
A member of the Class of 2025 at Charlotte Catholic High School, Kate was an exceptional student and dedicated varsity volleyball player. Creative and curious, she was a talented artist and accomplished baker known for her beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes. She loved the beach, traveling, history, and skiing in the Rocky Mountains, but above all, she cherished time with family and friends. Parties, gatherings, holidays, and traditions mattered deeply to her.
Throughout her illness, Kate displayed remarkable courage and resilience, refusing to be defined by cancer. She continued attending school, playing volleyball, working as a lifeguard, and nurturing her friendships. Her life was defined not by its length, but by the love, joy, and positivity she shared so generously. Laugh Like Kate aims to carry forward this legacy.
